Most of the small Hindu minority in Indonesia lives in Bali. According to the 2010 census, Bali was home to 3,891,000 people. About 3.6 million of these are Hindu and the vast majority of the remainder are Muslim.
The form of Hinduism practised in Bali, indeed throughout Indonesia, is known as Balinese Hinduism, Indonesian Hinduism or Agama Hindu Dharma. Though it has its roots in forms of Hinduism brought by regional conquerors and traders, today’s Indonesian Hinduism is heavily influenced by both the region’s form of pre-Hindu Buddhism and the even older animism that preceded both spiritual imports. Additionally, the form of Islam practised by most Indonesians also incorporates many influences from the nation’s history and ethnic traditions.
